Christchurch and Russley each collected two trophies as Canterbury’s premier interclub season concluded at Clearwater on Sunday, November 1, with Rangiora claiming the remaining title.
Christchurch Golf Club won the Woodward Cup and Thompson MacDonald Trophy, while Russley secured the Pollock and Blank Cups. Rangiora completed the five-title honours list with victory in the Simon Cup.
Canterbury Golf confirmed the champions in its post-event announcement following the Lamb & Hayward Interclub Finals Day.
Christchurch Convert Top Seeding Into Woodward Cup Success
Christchurch arrived as the Woodward Cup’s leading round-robin side, having recorded seven wins from nine matches.
They beat Russley 6½–1½ in the morning semi-final, with Tim Leonard winning 4&3 and Uny Shao 4&2. Templeton defeated hosts Clearwater 6–2 in the other semi-final.
Christchurch then beat Templeton 5–3 in the final, adding Canterbury’s top men’s interclub title to their Thompson MacDonald success.
Their Thompson MacDonald title came via a 5–1 final win that ended Amberley’s bid for silverware in their debut season in the Thompson MacDonald competition. Christchurch had reached that final after qualifying third in their section and defeating Avondale and Coringa in the knockout rounds.
Russley Retain Pollock Cup And Add Blank Cup
Russley’s women completed a successful Pollock Cup defence after entering the final against Christchurch unbeaten through the round robin, with six wins and two ties, and beat them 5–1.
Their Blank Cup teammates also finished as champions after overcoming a significant hurdle earlier in the day.
Russley beat Christchurch 4½–3½ in the semi-final, ending a campaign in which Christchurch had won all nine round-robin matches. Coringa defeated Harewood 5–3 to take the other place in the final, where Russley won 5½–2½.
Rangiora Complete The Honours List
Rangiora took the Simon Cup with a 5–3 final win over Clearwater.
Their route included a 6–2 semi-final victory over Weedons on October 18, having qualified third for the playoffs.
