Meet the personalities behind the scorecards. In this NZ Golf Magazine series, we’re getting to know golf enthusiasts from across New Zealand — their favourite courses, memorable moments and what keeps them coming back.
You don’t need a low handicap — just a love of the game!
Meet Te Ao Peehi Kara France, an Auckland golfer who calls Royal Chamberlain home. With a year and a half in the game and a 28.9 handicap, Te Ao joins our Clubhouse Characters series to share memorable moments and what keeps them coming back to the course. Metalwood is their favourite golf brand — follow their golfing journey at @tp.karafrance.
How Did Golf Get You Hooked?
I was living down in Wellington for a couple of years, and I got invited out to play golf with a few mates. I didn’t have a set, so we shared their bag. I was constantly asking, “What club should I use from here?” I actually remember searching on YouTube how to hit a golf ball properly before I went out and surprisingly played pretty well!
What Keeps You Coming Back?
Firstly, it is being outdoors away from my phone and computer; then it is the company, either with friends or getting to know new people who you are playing with. Then finally, it is that feeling when you strike it and your heart, that perfect ping-like sound that keeps me in it and addicted. Even if you play crap the whole round, those 1 or 2 good shots make it all worth it.
Give Us The Local Knowledge
Hole 1 at Royal Chamberlain. Make sure you play it on a Saturday morning with a line-up of about 50 people all watching you hit with no warm-up. Pressure makes diamonds.
Where Else In New Zealand Do You Love Playing?
Waipū Golf Course – It’s just down the road from my in-laws’ house, so it’s a perfect way to start a weekend, teeing off at sunrise on the beautiful Ruakākā coastline. Next best thing after Te Arai, in my view!
What’s Your Most Memorable Golfing Moment?
I have quite a high handicap, but I feel like I play better than what it is. I have entered a few comps with my uncle, and I love when I get called a sandbagger or Bullsh**t you’re a 29 handicap, haha. It is always a good laugh!
What’s The Best Part Of Your Golf Game — And What Needs Work?
At the moment, my best part is my putting. My wedge games need some more work.
Who’s Joining Your Dream Fourball?
Alright, we’ve got Michael Jordan, Kevin Hart and Shaun Johnson
What Would You Tell Someone Thinking About Giving Golf A Go?
My tip is: don’t buy a new set; go buy a second-hand trusted brand set and give it a go!
