Meet Regan Curran, a Matamata golfer who picked up the game around March–April 2026 and calls Walton Golf Club home. Playing off a 30.2 handicap, Regan joins our Clubhouse Characters series to share his golfing journey. How Did Golf Get You Hooked?
Got hooked after a Charity tournament; went as a group from work (all new to the game) and came dead last 😂. We all had an absolute blast, though!
What Keeps You Coming Back?
I’ve never felt so uncoordinated playing a sport, and the challenge of that became an addiction very fast 😅
Give Us The Local Knowledge
My favourite hole at Walton Golf Course would have to be Hole 9! Little water 10 odd meters out, but once you are over, you have a very nice dogleg left back up towards the clubhouse. I advise trying to hole out off the green (not that I can 😂) because she’s a gnarly green that one!
Where Else In New Zealand Do You Love Playing?
Okoroire golf course! It’s a country course, but for $20 it’s the perfect short 9-hole course to go out and learn/practice on, usually very quiet! Just don’t make my mistake and think you are close to breaking 90, then join a proper course and get heavily humbled 🤣
What’s Your Most Memorable Golfing Moment?
I don’t have many yet, honestly, but my first ever birdie would definitely be up there 😅 bit of a fluke, but a 🐦 is a 🐦
What’s The Best Part Of Your Golf Game — And What Needs Work?
Best part of my game would be my short chipping game (around the fringe), and what needs work would be my driver! Only club I don’t feel comfortable over the ball with and massively needs some distance added; I had my first lesson recently, so we’re working on it 😬😅
Who’s Joining Your Dream Fourball?
John Daley (the stories would have you in fits 🤣). BigJohnGolfs (absolute weapon, and those 2 would together would be pure comedy), and lastly Cooper Cronk (idolised this guy growing up and could just see him being a natural)
What Would You Tell Someone Thinking About Giving Golf A Go?
Just give it an honest go! Don’t be put off if you find it hard, because even the professionals were taught by someone 🤷🏻♂️
