Meet the personalities behind the scorecards. In this NZ Golf Magazine series, we’re getting to know golf enthusiasts from across New Zealand — their favourite courses, memorable moments and what keeps them coming back.

You don’t need a low handicap — just a love of the game!

Meet Max Walsh, a Whanganui golfer who first picked up a club at just five years old. Calling Castlecliff Golf Club home and playing off a 20.6 handicap, Max joins our Clubhouse Characters series to share his golfing story. Titleist is his favourite golf brand, while his music tastes span everything from country to heavy metal. Follow his journey on Instagram at @athletemax.nz.

How Did Golf Get You Hooked?

My dad, Paul,  built us a small pitch n putt course in our backyard.  It was pretty rough, but I loved it, and we spent ages out there playing and practising on it. I loved the challenge of hitting a good shot, and I still do.

What Keeps You Coming Back?

I love playing golf because of the people I have played with and the friends I have made.

Give Us The Local Knowledge

My favourite hole is # 4 at Castlecliff Golf Club.  It’s a short, downhill par 3 with a tree blocking the left-hand side of the tee shot. Keeping it right is the only way to win on this hole.  That tree has eaten plenty of balls!!

Where Else In New Zealand Do You Love Playing?

Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary is my favourite away-from-home course because of its wildlife and the great test-range holes it has to offer. Watching deer cross the fairway never gets old.

What’s Your Most Memorable Golfing Moment?

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to go back to Macau to compete in the invitational Macau Golf Masters, where I finished 2nd in my division. To make it even more special, my best mate  Elliott surprised me by turning up to caddy for me.  Such a great time.

What’s The Best Part Of Your Golf Game — And What Needs Work?

The strongest aspect of my game is my driver because I can usually keep it straight. My weakness is rushing into a shot and not being on the same page as my caddy/coach, Ivan Howe, so we are working on this and have come up with some ideas on how I can slow down

Who’s Joining Your Dream Fourball?

Great company for a round of golf would be my Dad, Elliott Farnan and Ivan Howe

What Would You Tell Someone Thinking About Giving Golf A Go?

Be patient, don’t rush and never give up.
